Help Your Winter Veggies

While winter lettuce, greens, carrots or other veggies may be growing happily in your plot, it’s easy to forget a fundamental step in caring for them – particularly with holiday activities taking over your schedule. Even though the weather has finally transitioned to more winter-like conditions, growing veggies still need nourishment. You should have prepared the plot before sowing your seed or installing seedlings by dressing with compost. But now, while they are growing, add a small amount of slow-release organic nutrients, such as cotton seed meal or Milorganite. Treat this as a single, small means of supporting the plants; too much will encourage an unsustainable flush of growth. And have a Happy Holiday season, perhaps with a salad or greens from your garden! – Carol Hassell
